Two young kabaddi players lost their lives and another was critically injured in a tragic road accident on the Jalandhar-Moga National Highway on Friday evening. The accident allegedly occurred due to the negligence of a tractor-trolley driver.
According to police, the three friends were travelling on a motorcycle from Malsian when they reached Ladra Adda. A tractor-trolley loaded with paddy straw was reportedly parked on the roadside.
The driver allegedly pulled the trolley onto the highway without checking for approaching traffic, causing the motorcycle to crash into the protruding straw bales.
The impact threw all three riders onto the road. Moments later, another trolley coming from behind ran over them, making the accident even more devastating.
Two riders died on the spot. They were identified as Harjot Singh (16) of Pandhera village, a Class 12 student, and Gurdeep Singh (23) alias Deepa of Khanpur Dhadda village, who was preparing to leave for the UK in the coming days.
The third rider, Hardeep Singh (17) of Billa Chau village, sustained critical injuries and was admitted to a hospital in Jalandhar for treatment.
Following the accident, local residents chased and caught the tractor driver as he attempted to flee and handed him over to the police.
Station House Officer Parlawinder Singh of Sadar Police Station said the bodies have been sent to Nakodar Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police have identified the accused driver and initiated further legal proceedings.
