A special train travelling from New Delhi to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra suffered a technical malfunction at Ludhiana Railway Station on Saturday (June 6, 2026) after a portion near the washroom of one coach broke with a loud noise, creating panic among passengers. Fortunately, no one was near the affected area, and no injuries were reported.
According to railway officials, the incident occurred just as the train was preparing to depart from Ludhiana. The coupler connecting two coaches reportedly failed, causing the coaches to separate and damaging the washroom section of the sleeper coach. The loud sound initially led passengers to believe an explosion had occurred, resulting in temporary chaos.
The train involved was the New Delhi–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Special (04081), which had departed from New Delhi earlier in the day for Katra.
Following the incident, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and local police rushed to the station and secured the area while railway engineers began an inspection of the damaged coach.
Ludhiana ADCP Sameer Verma said that the disturbance was caused by a technical fault in the S-2 coach around 9 a.m. Officials investigating the incident found that the damage appeared to be the result of a welding failure. Engineers said the coach was old and the weakened weld near the washroom section gave way, leading to the structural breakage.
Railway authorities are continuing their investigation while repair work is underway before the train resumes its journey.
