A wanted gangster was injured and arrested following an encounter with the CIA staff and local police near Naushehra Pannuan in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district on Saturday. The accused, identified as Sajjanpreet Singh alias Sajan Singh, sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the exchange of fire and was admitted to the Civil Hospital in Tarn Taran for treatment.

According to police, Sajjan Singh was wanted in connection with the murder of Ajmeet Singh, an accused in the high-profile 2022 RPG attack on the Sarhali police station. A motorcycle and a .30-bore pistol were recovered from his possession.

SP (Investigation) Dr. Riputapan Singh said the police had received a tip-off that Sajjan Singh, a resident of Kot Mohammad Khan village, was moving around the Naushehra Pannuan area on a motorcycle. Acting on the information, a joint team of CIA Tarn Taran and Sarhali police launched a search operation and set up checkpoints in the area.

During the operation, police signalled a suspicious motorcyclist to stop. Instead of complying, the suspect allegedly sped away and opened fire on the police team. The police retaliated in self-defence, during which Sajjan Singh was hit in the leg and fell from the motorcycle.

The injured accused was immediately overpowered and taken into custody. He was later shifted to the Civil Hospital for medical treatment. Police have registered the case and further investigation is underway.
