A heartbreaking incident has emerged from Punjab's Mohali district, where a woman allegedly pushed her three young children into the Ropar canal, resulting in the deaths of two children while the search continues for the third.
According to police, the accused, identified as Shakuntala, a resident of Mataur, left home on Monday with her children—10-year-old Tapish, 7-year-old Tanvi, and 4-year-old Nitin—after telling family members she was taking them to a fair and would buy them toy Thar vehicles.
A few hours later, the family received shocking information that the children had been pushed into the Ropar canal. Rescue teams recovered the bodies of two children, while efforts to locate the third child are still underway.
Shakuntala's mother-in-law, Lal Kaur, said the family had no reason to suspect anything unusual when she left the house with the children. She revealed that Shakuntala had been struggling emotionally since her husband's death around 10 months ago. According to the family, she had previously attempted suicide by hanging but was rescued in time.
A neighbour, Lalwati, said the elder family members were away at work when the incident occurred. No one imagined that a routine outing with the children would end in such a devastating tragedy.
Mataur Police Station SHO Amandeep Singh confirmed that police received information on Monday about a woman allegedly throwing her three children into the canal. Police and rescue teams immediately reached the spot, recovering two bodies while continuing the search for the missing child.
The accused woman has been taken into police custody and is being questioned. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, and all aspects of the case, including the woman's mental condition and the circumstances leading to the incident, are being examined.
