The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Delhi Police to take stronger measures to ensure the safety of women, stressing that every woman must be able to feel secure even while travelling or stepping out at 10 pm.

Taking suo motu cognisance of recent rape cases reported in Delhi and adjoining areas, including the alleged gang rape of a minor in a sleeper bus, the court issued strong observations on the need for effective policing and deterrence against sexual crimes.

The court said the police must create fear in the minds of men who have a tendency to commit sexual offences. It observed that the situation would not improve unless anti-social elements were made to believe that committing such crimes would have serious and certain consequences.

The Supreme Court emphasised that policing should not merely respond to crimes after they occur but should also prevent offences by maintaining a visible and effective presence in vulnerable areas.

The court's observations came amid concerns over the safety of women and girls in Delhi and neighbouring areas, particularly during late evening and night hours.

The court directed the Delhi Police to ensure that women are protected and can move around without fear, underlining that safety measures must remain effective even at night.

The proceedings are part of the Supreme Court's suo motu intervention following a series of sexual assault cases, with the court seeking greater accountability and concrete measures from law-enforcement authorities.
