Punjab's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has emerged as the clear winner in the civic elections held across four urban local bodies, further strengthening its position in the state's local politics ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The party secured victory in 56 of the 95 wards, maintaining the momentum it had built in previous municipal polls.
Voting for the elections was held on July 5 in four civic bodies across Hoshiarpur, Fazilka, and Ferozepur districts. The polls covered 50 wards of Hoshiarpur Municipal Corporation, 17 wards of Jalalabad Municipal Council, 15 wards of Guruhar Sahai Municipal Council, and 13 wards of Mamdot Nagar Panchayat.
According to the final results, AAP won 56 seats across the four local bodies. The Congress secured 26 seats, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) won seven. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to win three seats, and Independent candidates emerged victorious in three wards.
AAP registered its strongest performance in Ferozepur district, where it won 35 of the 50 wards. Congress secured nine seats, BJP won three, and Independent candidates claimed the remaining three wards.
In the Jalalabad Municipal Council election in Fazilka district, AAP continued its dominance by winning 12 of the 17 seats. Congress secured four seats, while the Shiromani Akali Dal won one seat.
A notable feature of the elections was that 11 candidates had already been declared elected unopposed before polling day, with voting conducted for the remaining wards.
The civic poll results are being viewed as politically significant, as they come ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections and are seen as an important indicator of the current political mood in the state.
