TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly assaulted during a visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal on Saturday evening, where he had gone to meet party workers and families affected by post-election violence.
According to Trinamool Congress leaders, a group of BJP supporters surrounded Banerjee shortly after his arrival, raising slogans and allegedly engaging in physical scuffles. Witnesses claimed that eggs were thrown at the MP and that his shirt was torn during the confrontation. Security personnel reportedly escorted him from the area while wearing a helmet for protection.
Banerjee alleged that the attack was “BJP-sponsored” and accused the opposition party of undermining democratic values. He said the entire incident had been captured on camera and vowed to pursue legal action.
“They wanted to attack me. The whole incident has been recorded. We will definitely inform the High Court and also brief the Governor about what happened,” Banerjee said, adding that he intends to take the matter to court.
The MP was in Sonarpur to meet families who were allegedly affected by violence following recent elections. The incident has further intensified the political confrontation between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP in West Bengal.
