Hyderabad Police have taken a stringent stand against the circulation of fake and AI-generated videos featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media. The city’s Cyber Crime Police have registered an FIR against Arun Srinivas and several social media users in connection with the viral videos shared on Facebook and Instagram.
The action follows the rapid spread of AI-morphed videos after a student protest held at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Officials said the manipulated videos were created using advanced technology and circulated in a manner that could seriously mislead the public.
According to investigating officers, fake videos related to PM Modi were being prepared and shared across major social media platforms, posing a significant risk of misinformation. Police are now conducting a detailed investigation to determine who first uploaded the videos, which accounts amplified them, and the intent behind their circulation.
The probe is also examining possible violations of provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, 2000.
The FIR comes just days after Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police issued summons to representatives of Meta Platforms. The company was asked to explain the mechanisms it has in place to detect and remove AI-generated fake advertisements, scams, and misleading content from its platforms.
A Meta representative had appeared before the investigators and provided details about the company’s content moderation policies and compliance procedures. However, the registration of the FIR indicates that the police are treating the gap between the company’s claims and the actual content circulating on its platforms with utmost seriousness.
