Democratic Party has taken control of both the US Senate and the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, ending the Republican Party’s control of Congress and delivering a major electoral setback to President Donald Trump.

The results mark a significant political shift in Washington, with Democrats gaining ground in several key states and defeating Republican candidates in closely watched contests. The outcome is expected to make it more challenging for Trump to advance his legislative agenda during the remaining two years of his presidency.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives were contested, while elections were held for 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats. Democrats secured the Senate majority after winning key races in states including North Carolina, Texas, Ohio, Kansas and South Carolina. They also captured the House, according to election projections and reported results.
