An FIR was registered against Congress leader Brinder Singh Dhillon at Chandigarh's Sector 11 police station on Thursday following allegations of assaulting Dalit leader Ranjeet Tarkhan, using casteist slurs and threatening to kill him.
Ranjeet Tarkhan had earlier filed a police complaint against Dhillon in connection with the alleged incident.
The matter was recently highlighted by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Chamkaur Sahib constituency in-charge Jasvir Singh Garhi during a press conference. Garhi claimed that the incident took place on October 27 afternoon at Congress Bhawan in Sector 15, Chandigarh.
According to Garhi, Ranjeet Tarkhan had gone to the washroom and was allegedly assaulted by Dhillon and his associates after coming out. He further alleged that several Congress leaders and workers were present at the building but none intervened to rescue Tarkhan.
Questioning the Congress party's attitude towards Dalits, Garhi accused the party leadership of failing to take the matter seriously.
He also referred to Dhillon's alleged proximity to former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, claiming that Dhillon had been seen with Channi on several occasions and had publicly expressed support for him.
