Continuous intermittent rainfall in the Yamunotri Valley has triggered landslides at several locations along the Yamunotri Highway, causing major disruption to traffic movement.
According to local authorities, debris and boulders falling onto the road have completely blocked vehicular movement since the early hours of Friday. Machines deployed by the construction agency engaged in the highway widening project have been pressed into service to remove the debris and restore connectivity.
Meanwhile, persistent rainfall has also led to a rise in the water level of the Yamuna River. In the disaster-affected Syanachatti area, the swollen river reached the first floors of some hotels, creating panic among local residents and business owners.
Officials, however, said that the Yamuna is currently flowing through its original channel and has not changed course or created a new stream. This has reduced the immediate risk of a major disaster in Syanachatti.
The administration is closely monitoring the situation and has assured that efforts are being intensified to reopen the Yamunotri Highway for traffic at the earliest. Rescue and precautionary measures remain in place as rainfall continues in the region.
