A major accident was averted at the Kaushalya Dam in Pinjore after a 12-year-old girl became trapped in deep mud while attempting to catch fish in the dried reservoir area. Prompt action by dam employees and local villagers helped rescue the child safely.

According to reports, the girl, who belongs to a migrant labourer family temporarily residing near the dam, had entered the dried lake bed to catch fish. While moving through the reservoir, she stepped into a marshy section in the middle of the dam and became stuck in deep sludge.

When she was unable to free herself, people nearby raised an alarm. Dam staff and local residents immediately launched a joint rescue operation and, after considerable effort, managed to pull her out safely. Fortunately, the girl did not suffer any serious injuries.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing risks associated with the drying of Kaushalya Dam. Apart from safety hazards, the shrinking water body has triggered an environmental crisis in the area.

With water levels depleted, a large number of fish have died across different sections of the reservoir. Dead fish can be seen lying in the open, and the resulting foul odour has become a major concern for nearby villages.

Residents have complained that the stench has made daily life difficult and that several people are experiencing breathing discomfort. Locals are urging authorities to take immediate measures to remove the dead fish and address the environmental and public health concerns arising from the dried-up dam.
