Finance Ministry has announced that all public sector banks and regional rural banks (RRBs) will remain open on Sunday, September 27, in view of the three-day nationwide bank strike scheduled from September 28 to 30, 2026.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the ministry said banking operations at public sector banks and RRBs would continue as usual on September 27 to ensure that customers can complete essential banking work before the proposed strike.
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called for a three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to 30. The strike follows the regular weekend holidays on September 26 and 27, raising concerns that banking services could otherwise remain disrupted for five consecutive days.
To minimise inconvenience to customers, the government has taken steps to keep banking services available on September 27. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also permitted all bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests to remain fully operational on Sunday.
Finance Ministry said the government and bank managements have appealed to the unions to withdraw the proposed strike and have taken measures to ensure that essential banking services continue without interruption.
Several major banks, including State Bank of India (SBI) and Punjab National Bank (PNB), had earlier issued advisories to customers regarding the proposed strike. SBI had advised customers to complete important banking-related work in advance, keeping the strike dates in mind.
The decision to open banks on September 27 is aimed at providing customers an additional working day before the three-day strike begins.
