The alleged suicide of a young granthi in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district has triggered widespread concern and outrage. In a major development, police have arrested six granthis in connection with the death of 28-year-old Jaspal Singh, who allegedly consumed a poisonous substance. A case has been registered under charges including abetment to suicide, criminal conspiracy, and other relevant sections of the law.
According to police, Jaspal Singh was engaged in performing religious services such as Akhand Path and Sehaj Path at various gurdwaras. In a complaint filed with the police, his father, Jagdish Singh, who is also a granthi, alleged that a group of individuals had been pressuring his son to share a portion of the income earned through these religious services.
The complaint further states that when Jaspal refused to comply with the demands, he was allegedly subjected to repeated threats, humiliation, and mental harassment. Family members claim that the continuous pressure and intimidation left him deeply distressed and emotionally troubled.
According to the family, Jaspal had been living under severe mental stress for several weeks. They allege that he was repeatedly intimidated and harassed, ultimately pushing him to take the extreme step. On June 12, his condition reportedly deteriorated after consuming the substance, and he was rushed to a hospital, where he later succumbed.
The incident has sparked anger among relatives, local residents, and members of the religious community. Following an investigation, police arrested six accused individuals. Officials have also indicated that the role of several other suspects is being examined as part of the ongoing probe.
Police authorities stated that all aspects of the case are being thoroughly investigated and assured that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty. The arrests have brought the case into the spotlight, with many calling for justice and greater accountability.
The tragic incident has also raised concerns within religious circles. Local residents believe that if the allegations are proven true, the case highlights not only the loss of a young religious worker but also deeper issues related to disputes, pressure, and misconduct within certain sections of religious institutions.
The investigation is ongoing, and further developments are expected as police continue to gather evidence and question those involved.
