Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fifth edition of Semicon India 2026 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, highlighting India’s progress in building a domestic semiconductor ecosystem.
Addressing the event, Modi said chips manufactured at plants in India are now reaching customers in the country and abroad. He described the Semicon India event as an important milestone amid India’s broader economic and industrial achievements.
The Prime Minister said India’s economy is expanding while global confidence in the country is also increasing. Referring to the quarterly GDP figures released in September, he said India recorded 7.8% growth despite challenging global conditions. He also pointed to an upgrade in India’s sovereign credit rating by a Japanese credit-rating agency, describing it as the first such upgrade in nearly 35 years.
From Policy Plans to Commercial Production
Modi reviewed the progress of the Semicon India program since its launch in 2022. He said the initiative began with policy discussions before moving to project approvals, agreements and foundation-stone ceremonies.
Last year, the focus shifted to pilot production lines and test chips, while this year the emphasis is on commercial semiconductor production. Modi also said commercial production is beginning at two additional facilities.
He announced the launch of the second phase of the India Semiconductor Mission. According to his remarks, the first phase had a value of around $8 billion, while the second phase has a target of $13.5 billion.
Global Semiconductor Industry Participation
More than 600 exhibitors, including around 300 international companies, are participating in Semicon India 2026. Delegations from more than 40 countries are also attending the event.
Major semiconductor and electronics companies participating include ASML, Applied Materials, Teradyne, Infineon, NXP, Tata Electronics, Micron, Lam Research, CG Power, Advantest and Tokyo Electron.
The event is expected to focus on investment, semiconductor technology and supply-chain development, while also providing opportunities for new business partnerships and international collaboration.
Six Country Pavilions
The exhibition features country pavilions from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore and Sweden. Several Indian states are also showcasing their semiconductor and electronics capabilities through dedicated pavilions.
The government has so far approved 12 semiconductor projects to strengthen manufacturing in India. According to the government, commercial production has already begun at three units approved during the first phase.
The Centre has also approved Semicon 2.0, aimed at further developing India’s semiconductor ecosystem and expanding capabilities across the sector.
