A 22-year-old woman living in a paying guest (PG) accommodation in Mohali died by suicide. Her body was found hanging in her room at a PG in Sector 80.
The deceased has been identified as Ridima, a resident of Abohar. Following the incident, the police have registered a case against her live-in partner, Om Tarun Shiv, who is currently absconding. The case has been filed based on the statement given by Ridima’s mother. Although the incident took place in February, the case has been registered now after her mother’s complaint.
According to reports, Ridima had been living in the PG for the past six months and was working at a private company in Mohali. She had been staying in Chandigarh for nearly three and a half years. During this time, she was in a live-in relationship with Om Tarun Shiv, a resident of Abal Khair village in Gurdaspur.
Family members have alleged that Om Tarun Shiv physically assaulted Ridima and mentally harassed her. They also claimed that he interfered with her marriage and often threatened her. Police investigation revealed that the PG room where Ridima was staying had been rented using the accused’s Aadhaar card.
CCTV footage shows that the couple had an argument on February 27. After the altercation, the accused left the PG around 3:00 PM with his belongings. The next day, February 28, Ridima died by suicide in her room.
Before taking the extreme step, Ridima reportedly called a friend in Canada and shared her distress. The friend later informed her mother about the situation. According to her mother, Ridima worked night shifts from 6:00 PM to 3:00 AM and had been under mental stress for a long time. On February 27, she had also spoken to her mother, who advised her to leave the job and return home.
Around 24 days after the incident, the Sohana Police have registered a case and launched a search operation to arrest the accused. Police officials said he will be arrested soon and further legal action will follow.
