A case of extortion and death threats has been reported in Mohali, where the husband of a serving Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor was allegedly threatened with death if he failed to pay ₹2 crore. The complainant has accused a person identified as Arju, allegedly linked to the Lawrence gang, of making the threat.
Following the complaint, Balongi police registered a case against three people, including Arju, under Sections 308(4) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police are gathering information about the accused and investigating the matter.
According to the complainant, the incident took place on October 4 when he was watching a match at the hockey stadium in Phase 9. During the match, he received a WhatsApp call from a foreign number, which he initially disconnected. When the caller rang again, he answered, but nobody spoke from the other side.
At around 6:30 pm, he received another call from a different number, which he did not answer. A few minutes later, his son received a call from an international number. The caller asked whether he was the son of an AAP councillor. After receiving confirmation, the caller allegedly said that his father was disconnecting his calls.
The caller then identified himself as Arju, claiming links with the Lawrence gang, and allegedly asked the family to arrange ₹2 crore. He also threatened to kill the complainant if the money was not paid.
The complainant told police that he is an AAP worker and his wife is a serving councillor. He looks after his wife's political and other work. He also owns ancestral land in the Balliali village area along Airport Road, which he and his son look after.
He has sought strict action against the accused and security for his family. Police have registered the case and are investigating the alleged extortion threat.
