Three people were killed and one was critically injured after a speeding BMW crashed on Mumbai’s Coastal Road early Sunday morning. The accident took place near Lotus Jetty at around 5:20 am when the luxury car was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali.
According to the Coastal Road Control Room, the BMW was moving at a high speed when the driver lost control near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College. The car then crashed, leaving all four occupants injured.
All four occupants were immediately rushed to the nearby civic-run Nair Hospital for treatment. However, doctors declared three of them dead on arrival. The deceased have been identified as 21-year-old Shanay Gajjal and 17-year-old Dhirya Seth. The identity of the third male victim, believed to be around 25 years old, has not yet been established.
The fourth occupant, an unidentified man aged around 20, sustained severe injuries in the crash. He is currently undergoing treatment in the trauma ward of Nair Hospital and remains in critical condition, officials said.
Police have launched an investigation into the accident. Preliminary information suggests that the BMW was travelling at high speed and the driver lost control of the vehicle. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine the exact cause of the accident.
The Mumbai Coastal Road is a 10.58-kilometre high-speed corridor connecting Marine Drive in south Mumbai with the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The accident occurred during the early morning hours when traffic on the stretch was relatively light.
The crash has once again highlighted concerns over speeding and road safety on high-speed corridors in Mumbai. Police are continuing their inquiry, while further details regarding the identities of the victims and the exact circumstances of the accident are awaited.
