Punjab and Chandigarh are set to witness a fresh spell of changing weather conditions as a new Western Disturbance becomes active from June 3. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for the next two days, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and rainfall in several parts of the state.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, wind speeds during this period may reach between 50 and 60 kmph in some districts. Despite a slight increase of 1.2 degrees Celsius in the maximum temperature compared to the previous day, temperatures remain 2.3 degrees below normal levels.

Bathinda recorded the highest temperature in Punjab at 40 degrees Celsius, while temperatures across the state's districts ranged between 35.3 and 40 degrees Celsius. Weather officials have indicated that heatwave conditions are unlikely to develop due to the expected rainfall and cooler weather.

An alert for thunderstorms and strong winds has been issued in 18 districts. Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, Barnala, and Mansa are likely to experience winds of 50-60 kmph.

Meanwhile, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Ludhiana, and Sangrur may witness winds ranging from 40-50 kmph.

The weather department also stated that the southwest monsoon is gradually advancing. Conditions are becoming favourable for its further progress over parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, and additional regions of the Bay of Bengal around June 4.

Meteorologists said an upper-air cyclonic circulation persists over Pakistan and adjoining northwest Rajasthan. Additionally, a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to affect northwest India from June 3. Under its influence, weather conditions are likely to change across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and several other parts of northern India, bringing rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.
