A shooting at a school campus in Zamboanga City Philippines on Tuesday left a student and two security guards dead, while nine others were injured. The suspected shooter, a Grade 9 student, also died after the attack.

The incident took place at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University campus, triggering panic among students and staff. Authorities said the suspect, identified as Mohammed Mael Jalani, arrived at the school carrying two pistols.

According to police, the student first fired at a teacher, who survived the attack. He then shot and killed a Grade 10 student before going to an upper floor of the building and jumping to his death.

Philippines Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the suspect was recording part of the incident on Facebook Live while climbing the stairs.

Following the shooting, the school suspended senior high school classes and moved younger students to safe areas. School authorities said all students had been accounted for and were being kept with their teachers.

Police urged parents to remain calm and follow information and instructions issued by the school instead of relying on unverified reports circulating online.

The Philippines Department of Education said support would be provided to affected students, families and school personnel. Counselling and mental health assistance will also be made available to help those affected cope with the trauma.

The department also appealed to the public not to share unverified news, photographs or videos related to the incident on social media.

The shooting is reportedly the second major school shooting in the Philippines in about two months.
