India becomes T20 World Champion after defeating New Zealand in Ahmedabad; players credit unity, confidence and team support for the historic victory
After India’s historic victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, young Indian cricketers Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma shared their emotions and reflected on the remarkable journey of the team. India defeated New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to lift the prestigious trophy, giving fans across the country a moment of celebration.
In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), both players spoke openly about the team’s atmosphere, the challenges faced during the tournament and the strong unity within the squad. Ishan Kishan described the victory as very special, highlighting that it was the first time a host nation had won the tournament.
Kishan said the team played with full dedication and supported each other throughout the competition. He recalled the heartbreak of the 2023 World Cup when players were left emotional in the dressing room, but this time the team returned stronger and managed to lift the trophy. He credited not only the players but also the support staff and everyone associated with the team for the memorable achievement.
Abhishek Sharma, meanwhile, called the World Cup victory the biggest and most memorable moment of his career so far. He said winning a World Cup is a dream for every cricketer and experiencing that moment was truly special.
Abhishek also revealed that he faced difficult phases earlier in the tournament when he struggled for runs. However, the support from teammates and the coaching staff helped him remain confident and focused. He said the positive environment within the team ensured that he never felt alone even during challenging times.
Praising his teammate, Ishan Kishan said Abhishek maintained a positive attitude even when things were not going his way and was always ready to help others in the team. His performance eventually paid off in the final, making the moment even more special.
Abhishek also returned the praise, saying that winning a World Cup for India is like a dream come true. He added that the entire journey, the team spirit and the ultimate victory would remain unforgettable for everyone involved.
