Newly appointed Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon formally assumed charge on Wednesday amid a ceremonial gathering marked by prayers and religious rituals. During the event, he also unveiled a portrait of Maharaja Ranjit Singh at the party office and described the occasion as a historic day for the state unit.
Addressing party workers and leaders, Dhillon said Maharaja Ranjit Singh, popularly known as the “Sher-e-Punjab,” governed with equality and justice, treating all communities alike. He expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party would form the government in Punjab in 2027 and work towards establishing a governance model inspired by Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s principles.
Following the charge-taking ceremony, a major party function was scheduled at Law Bhawan in Sector 37, Chandigarh. The event was attended by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, former Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar, BJP National Vice-President Saudan Singh, National General Secretary Tarun Chugh, National Secretary Narendra Singh Raina, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, BJP Mahila Morcha Punjab president Jai Inder Kaur, senior party leaders and a large number of workers.
Dhillon has become the first Jat Sikh president of the Punjab BJP. He has been active in politics for more than two decades and previously served as an MLA during his long association with the Congress before joining the BJP.
Since taking over the party's reins, Dhillon has intensified organisational outreach, meeting BJP leaders and workers across Punjab to strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
However, his appointment has not been without controversy. Shortly after the BJP announced his name for the top state post, former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh publicly questioned the decision. Speaking to the media, Amarinder Singh said, “Kewal Dhillon is a good friend of mine, but he is not the right choice for the position of BJP president.”
