Punjab government has approached the Supreme Court challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s order directing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe a case related to letters sent by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to the Punjab Director General of Police.

The state government has filed a petition before the Supreme Court questioning the High Court’s decision to hand over the investigation to the CBI. The matter will now come up for hearing before the apex court.

The High Court had directed the CBI to register a case and conduct an investigation into the matter concerning letters sent by the ED to the Punjab Police. The court had also directed the central agency to submit its investigation report within two months.

The case is linked to allegations of corruption involving people associated with the Punjab Chief Minister’s Office. High Court’s order came while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Nikhil Saraf.

The PIL had sought an independent investigation based on letters allegedly sent by the ED to the Punjab Police. Following the High Court’s directions, the CBI was asked to take up the matter and conduct a probe.

The Punjab government has now challenged the High Court’s order before the Supreme Court, setting the stage for a hearing on whether the CBI investigation should proceed.
