A major explosion followed by a massive fire struck the Barzan gas supply plant in Qatar's Ras Laffan Industrial City on Sunday night, leaving at least 54 workers injured and 18 others missing, according to Qatari authorities. The incident occurred while employees were attempting to restart operations at the facility after a prolonged disruption linked to regional tensions and restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The blast reportedly erupted during efforts to resume operations at the strategic gas facility, triggering a large fire and prompting an emergency response. Rescue teams were deployed to the site as authorities launched search operations for the missing workers.
The accident has raised concerns across global energy markets, as Qatar is one of the world's leading producers and exporters of natural gas. Ras Laffan Industrial City is a critical hub for the country's liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry and plays a significant role in global energy supplies.
Qatar had earlier suspended production after attacks and disruptions linked to regional conflict affected energy infrastructure and shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
