Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over a viral video featuring Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and a packet of Melody candies. Rahul Gandhi described the episode as “drama, not leadership” amid growing economic concerns in the country.

The controversy began after Meloni shared a 12-second clip on social media platform X in which she was seen standing beside PM Modi. In the video, Meloni says that Modi brought a “very nice gift” for them — a packet of Melody toffees. PM Modi then holds up the candy packet toward the camera, after which both leaders burst into laughter.

Reacting sharply to the clip, Rahul Gandhi posted on X saying, “An economic storm is looming over the country, and our Prime Minister is distributing candies in Italy. Farmers, youth, women, labourers and small traders are suffering, while the PM is busy making reels and BJP leaders are applauding. This is not leadership, it is theatrics.”

Earlier, PM Modi had also attended a dinner hosted by Giorgia Meloni during his Italy visit. He later shared photographs from the event on X and said he was looking forward to discussions with Meloni to further strengthen India-Italy relations.
