A 28-year-old woman from Panchkula, who had allegedly set herself on fire outside the Baltana Police Post, died during treatment at PGIMER Chandigarh on Saturday. She had accused the police of not taking adequate action in a rape and cheating case registered against her former partner.
According to police officials, the woman was in a relationship with the accused, who allegedly promised to marry her and persuaded her to invest money in opening a salon. The accused reportedly took around Rs 5 lakh from her including Rs 2 lakh in cash while the remaining amount was arranged through a loan taken in the woman’s name.
As disputes over money and loan installments intensified, the relationship turned bitter. The woman later filed a police complaint alleging that the man had raped her on the pretext of marriage and also cheated her financially.
Police said a case had already been registered against the accused and he was arrested. However, the woman alleged that no further action was being taken in the matter. Upset over the alleged delay in justice, she set herself ablaze outside the police post in Zirakpur.
She had sustained severe burn injuries and was admitted to PGI Chandigarh, where she succumbed during treatment. Police said further investigation is underway.
