A four-year-old girl died after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district on Sunday evening. The child was with her family at a paddy field where her parents were working when the incident took place.
The deceased, identified as Gungun, belonged to a migrant family from Dhyanpur village in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. The family had been living in Basi Jalal village near Dasuya and earning a livelihood through agricultural labour.
According to local residents, Gungun’s parents, Ram Jeevan and Preeti, were transplanting paddy in a farmer’s field. They had laid the child under the shade of a tree near a water motor, about 100 metres away from where they were working.
At around 5:30 pm, a pack of nearly seven stray dogs allegedly attacked the child and dragged her some distance. Hearing her screams, the parents and other family members rushed to the spot and found Gungun critically injured.
The family immediately took her to the Government Hospital in Tanda, where doctors referred her to Hoshiarpur due to the severity of her injuries. She later succumbed to her injuries during treatment late Sunday night.
The incident has triggered concern among residents over the growing menace of stray dogs in the region. Notably, this is not the first such tragedy in the area. On May 6, a migrant labourer’s young daughter was also killed in a similar stray dog attack in nearby Kharal Khurd village.
Local authorities are facing increasing pressure to take urgent measures to control stray dog attacks and improve public safety in rural areas.
