AAP MP from Sri Anandpur Sahib, Malvinder Singh Kang, on Wednesday met Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and urged the Centre to declare the Banga–Garhshankar–Sri Anandpur Sahib–Naina Devi Road a National Highway.

Kang said the route is of religious, strategic and economic importance as it connects Sri Anandpur Sahib, one of Sikhism’s holiest sites, with the Mata Naina Devi Temple in Himachal Pradesh. Lakhs of pilgrims and tourists travel on this road every year.

He added that National Highway status would improve connectivity, road safety, tourism, trade and regional development in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.

Kang also pointed out that despite earlier announcements and a foundation stone laid in 2019, the project has seen little progress. He urged the Centre to bring the route under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for timely development and expansion.

After the meeting, Kang said Gadkari gave a positive assurance and expressed hope that the Union Government would take early action on the long-pending demand.
