An Indian Army soldier allegedly died by suicide after consuming a poisonous substance and accusing his wife of mentally harassing him.
Before taking the extreme step, the soldier went live on Facebook and claimed that his wife had eloped with her lover just two months after their marriage.
The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Kanwaljit Singh, a resident of Chhit village in Batala, Gurdaspur district. He had joined the Indian Army around three years ago and was currently posted with the 17 Sikh Regiment in Jaipur.
Recently, he had been sent to Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, on temporary duty.
According to reports, Kanwaljit had gotten married nearly three months ago.
On Friday (May 22), while travelling, he went live on Facebook, levelled serious allegations against his wife, and allegedly consumed poison. He was cremated on Saturday, leaving the entire village in mourning.
The soldier’s sister, Sandeep Kaur, also accused his wife and her family of harassing him mentally. She claimed that Kanwaljit was deeply disturbed by his wife’s behaviour and had repeatedly informed his father-in-law about her alleged relationship with another man. However, according to the family, their concerns were ignored.
Meanwhile, ASI Ramesh Kumar from Shekhupur police chowki under Sadar police station said that a case had already been registered against unidentified persons based on Kanwaljit’s earlier complaint. Since the suicide incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, further legal action and investigation will now be handled by the Jabalpur police.
