Australia is grappling with an unusual yet serious rodent crisis as rat populations have surged across several parts of the country, creating major challenges for farmers, local authorities and residents alike. The infestation has spread from farmlands to homes and even public facilities, raising concerns over health and economic losses.
The outbreak has been particularly severe in major agricultural regions of Western Australia and South Australia, where thousands of rats are destroying standing crops. Many farmers have been forced to replant fields or spend large amounts on poisoned bait in an effort to control the infestation.
Farmers say they have rarely witnessed a crisis of this scale in more than two decades of farming. Many report hearing rats scurrying through roofs, walls and air-conditioning units at night, while the smell from dead rodents has become a persistent problem in affected areas.
Experts believe the rodent explosion is largely the result of last year's record grain harvest. Large quantities of spilled grain left in fields created an abundant food supply, allowing rat populations to multiply rapidly and spread across farming communities.
