Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has launched a strict enforcement drive against property tax defaulters, initiating legal action to recover outstanding dues from both commercial and residential property owners.

Commercial property owners who have failed to pay their property tax are being served property attachment notices, while residential defaulters face the possibility of water supply and sewerage connections being disconnected as part of the recovery process.

The civic body has already issued notices to more than 1,000 property tax defaulters and has prepared a list of over 3,000 additional defaulters, who will receive notices in the coming days. Officials said the process is currently progressing at a slower pace as a significant portion of the corporation's staff is engaged in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Once that work is completed, the notice issuance process will be accelerated.

Despite offering a 20% rebate on property tax payments from April to June at the beginning of the current financial year, many property owners failed to clear their dues. The Municipal Corporation has now begun sending recovery, attachment, and sealing notices in a phased manner.

Corporation officials stated that the action is being taken under the provisions of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act and the Property Tax Bye-laws. With the rebate period now over, defaulters are also liable to pay a 25% penalty along with 12% annual interest on the outstanding amount.
