Chandigarh resident and 88-year-old retired Punjab Police DIG, Inderjit Singh Sidhu, has been conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri for his remarkable contribution to social service and public cleanliness. Popularly known as the “Broom Warrior,” Sidhu has become an inspiring symbol of civic responsibility through his selfless efforts to keep the city clean.

The honour was announced on the occasion of Republic Day and was formally presented by President Droupadi Murmu during a Civil Investiture Ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

Since retiring from the police force, Sidhu has dedicated his mornings to cleaning roads and public spaces across Chandigarh and Mohali. Every day, he rides a bicycle-cart carrying brooms and waste-collection equipment, personally sweeping streets and encouraging residents to maintain cleanliness.

His unwavering commitment to community service and environmental awareness has earned him widespread respect and admiration, making him a role model for citizens across the country. The Padma Shri recognition highlights the impact of his grassroots efforts and his dedication to creating cleaner and healthier urban spaces.
