The leadership tussle within the Punjab Congress appears to have come to an end after the party high command made it clear that Amarinder Singh Raja Warring will continue as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president.
The decision was conveyed during a meeting at Indira Bhawan in New Delhi between Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal and senior party leaders. The meeting effectively ended nearly two weeks of internal dissent led by former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and his supporters, who had been demanding a change in the state leadership.
Following the meeting, Channi publicly accepted the party's decision, stating that the Congress remains his top priority and that the high command's verdict is final. He also reaffirmed his loyalty to Rahul Gandhi, saying the party leadership's decision would be respected in full.
Earlier, Channi's camp had openly campaigned for Raja Warring's removal, with several senior Congress leaders backing the demand. During Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel's recent visit to Chandigarh, he had already indicated that there would be no change in the state leadership. On the final day of that visit, around 70 to 80 Congress leaders attended a meeting at the residence of Rana Gurjeet Singh, where the demand for replacing Warring was reiterated.
Sources also said Rahul Gandhi did not hold a separate meeting with the Channi camp during the recent developments. Rahul Gandhi is also expected to visit Punjab soon as the Congress intensifies preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections.
