Ahead of the Independence Day celebrations on 15 August 2026, the Delhi Traffic Police has appealed to residents and commuters to cooperate in maintaining safe and smooth traffic movement across the national capital. Authorities have urged people to plan their journeys in advance and travel safely during the celebrations.

Major Traffic Restrictions Around Red Fort

In view of security arrangements and public convenience, special traffic restrictions and diversions will remain in force around the Red Fort on Saturday, 15 August. According to the advisory, several roads in the vicinity of the Red Fort will remain closed for general traffic from 4:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Only vehicles carrying valid labels or passes will be allowed to enter the restricted zone.

Roads That Will Remain Closed

The Delhi Traffic Police has announced closures on the following routes:

  • Netaji Subhash Marg: from Delhi Gate to Chatta Rail Chowk via Lothian Road

  • GPO Delhi to Chatta Rail Chowk

  • S.P. Mukherjee Marg: from H.C. Sen Marg to Yamuna Bazar Chowk

  • Chandni Chowk Road: from Fountain Chowk to Red Fort

  • Nishad Raj Marg: from Ring Road to Netaji Subhash Marg

  • Esplanade Road and Link Road connecting to Netaji Subhash Marg

  • Ring Road: from Rajghat to ISBT Kashmiri Gate

Commuters Advised to Avoid These Routes

The advisory has also recommended avoiding several busy stretches that are likely to witness heavy congestion, including:

  • C-Hexagon

  • India Gate–Copernicus Marg

  • Mandi House

  • Tilak Marg

  • Mathura Road

  • BSZ Marg

  • Netaji Subhash Marg

  • J.L. Nehru Marg

  • Ring Road between Nizamuddin Khatta and ISBT

  • Kashmiri Gate Outer Ring Road via Salimgarh Bypass

Security Tightened Across National Capital

Ahead of the Independence Day celebrations, Delhi Police has intensified security arrangements throughout the city. Increased patrolling, vehicle checking, drone surveillance, and mock drills are being conducted to ensure the smooth conduct of official events.

Security has been strengthened at city borders, crowded markets, shopping malls, hotels, public places, and other sensitive locations as part of the high-alert measures.

Delhi Traffic Police has requested citizens to follow traffic advisories, use alternate routes where possible, and cooperate with security personnel to ensure a safe and hassle-free Independence Day celebration.
