India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a heavy rainfall alert for several states across the country, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds over the next few days.
According to the weather department, thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning and gusty winds is likely to continue in several regions until June 25. States expected to be affected include Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.
The IMD has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim. Heavy rain is also likely in Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, Coastal Karnataka, Madhya Maharashtra, Goa, Odisha, Telangana, Kerala, and several northeastern states.
The national capital and surrounding areas have been experiencing intense heat in recent weeks. June is typically one of Delhi’s hottest months, with temperatures frequently crossing the 40-degree Celsius mark. However, the IMD expects thunderstorms and strong winds to provide some relief from the scorching conditions in the coming days.
Despite the anticipated weather change, Delhi’s air quality continues to remain in the “poor” category.
Meanwhile, after a nearly two-week slowdown, the southwest monsoon has regained momentum in Maharashtra. Cloud activity has intensified over Mumbai, indicating a fresh spell of rainfall and strengthening monsoon conditions across the region.
