Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday staged a protest at the Sansad Marg police station, demanding an FIR over the alleged use of pellet guns against students during a protest last month.
Gandhi reached the police station along with injured student Sahil Lochav and demanded that a case be registered based on Lochav’s complaint. The Congress leader later sat on a dharna at the police station, pressing the police to take action.
After nearly five hours of protest, reports emerged that the police had agreed to register an FIR on Lochav’s complaint. The case is reportedly being registered against unidentified persons.
Lochav has alleged that he sustained pellet injuries during police action against students during a protest on July 20. The alleged incident took place when students marching from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament faced a police crackdown amid rising tensions between protesters and security personnel.
The July 20 protest was organised over issues related to the alleged NEET paper leak and concerns surrounding the education system. The demonstration was led by the Cockrej Janata Party (CJP).
The Congress has alleged that excessive force was used against the protesting students and has demanded an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged pellet firing.
Rahul Gandhi had earlier highlighted Lochav’s case and accused the authorities of failing to take appropriate action. His decision to accompany the injured student to the police station and stage a sit-in intensified pressure on the authorities to register the complaint.
The reported agreement to register the FIR marks a significant development in the case, although the allegations surrounding the use of pellet guns and the identity of those responsible will be subject to investigation.
