Punjab government has officially capped annual fee hikes by private unaided schools at 5% after Governor Gulab Chand Kataria approved the state's fee regulation ordinance. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced the development through a post on X, calling it a major step in the interest of students and parents.

Sharing a copy of the approved order, Mann thanked the Governor for endorsing the government's decision aimed at protecting families from arbitrary increases in school fees. He said the Governor had signed The Punjab Regulation of Fee of Unaided Education Institutions (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026, bringing the new provision into effect.

Under the ordinance, no private unaided school in Punjab will be allowed to increase its annual fees by more than 5% at its own discretion. The government said the measure is intended to curb unjustified fee hikes and provide financial relief to parents.

Reaffirming his government's commitment to affordable education, the Chief Minister said education would not be allowed to become a commercial enterprise and that the state would continue taking steps to reduce the financial burden on ordinary families.
