The Election Commission has announced the launch of a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Punjab and Chandigarh from June 15. Punjab currently has around 21.4 million registered voters, and officials will carry out a large-scale verification drive ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Under the SIR process, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit homes to verify voter details. During the exercise, names of new eligible voters aged 18 and above will be added to the voter list, while fake, duplicate and incorrect entries will be removed.
The revision process will also help delete names of deceased voters and those who have shifted to other locations. Errors in names, addresses and other voter details will also be corrected.
The Election Commission said SIR is a routine electoral process aimed at keeping voter lists accurate and updated. BLOs and Booth Level Agents (BLAs) will distribute forms to voters during the verification drive. Citizens will need to verify their details and submit documents wherever required.
If a voter’s name appears in two different constituencies, it must be removed from one list. Those whose names are missing from the electoral roll can apply for inclusion by filling out the required forms and submitting valid documents.
Documents accepted for verification include Aadhaar card, passport, birth certificate, Class 10 marksheet, pension identity card, caste certificate, permanent residence certificate, government-issued identity cards, forest rights certificate, land or house allotment papers and entries in the NRC or family register.
The Election Commission stated that intensive revisions were conducted between 1951 and 2004, but similar large-scale updates have not been carried out over the last 21 years. Due to migration, duplicate registrations and other demographic changes, updating the voter list has become necessary to ensure that no eligible voter is left out and no ineligible name remains on the rolls.
