Punjab’s civic body elections have delivered a major victory for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), with the party winning 925 wards across 8 municipal corporations, 75 municipal councils and 20 nagar panchayats during counting that began at 8 AM on Friday.
The Indian National Congress emerged as the second-largest force in the elections, while independent candidates secured the third position. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which had recently spoken about targeting Punjab after its success in Bengal, remained far behind in the overall results. The Shiromani Akali Dal also failed to make a major comeback and slipped to the fourth spot.
Out of the 8 municipal corporations, results from 5 have been declared so far. Congress secured a majority in Kapurthala, while BJP won Abohar Municipal Corporation. AAP registered victories in Bathinda, Moga and Barnala municipal corporations.
Results from Mohali, Batala and Pathankot municipal corporations are still awaited.
A total of 115 counting centres have been set up across the state with multi-layered security arrangements. A security perimeter of 100 metres has been established around each centre to prevent unauthorized entry. Only candidates and their authorised counting agents are allowed inside. Surveillance is being maintained through CCTV cameras, and heavy police deployment is in place under the supervision of respective district SSPs.
Officials added that the State Election Commission has ensured transparency and accessibility in results reporting. For the first time, citizens will be able to view live municipal election results online through the official portal: Punjab State Election Commission Results Portal.
