The ongoing internal tussle within the Punjab Congress has now reached the party's central leadership, with the high command stepping in to address growing differences over the state's leadership. Amid rising discontent among senior leaders, the Congress has accelerated efforts to resolve the issue before the next Assembly elections.
As part of the exercise, former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and several other senior leaders are expected to meet the party leadership in New Delhi either on Wednesday or Thursday. Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel has also been summoned to the national capital.
Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, arrived in Delhi on Wednesday and is likely to hold discussions with Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal. Other senior Punjab Congress leaders are also expected to present their views before the high command.
The meetings are expected to shape the party's future strategy in Punjab as the Congress seeks to strengthen unity within the state unit.
The development comes after Bhupesh Baghel spent six days in Chandigarh recently, holding separate meetings with Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Partap Singh Bajwa and other senior leaders to assess the situation.
According to party sources, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, party president Mallikarjun Kharge and K.C. Venugopal held detailed discussions on Punjab's political situation on Tuesday. The leadership reportedly decided to hear directly from dissatisfied leaders in an effort to bridge differences and ensure organisational unity ahead of the Assembly elections.
