A major shift in weather conditions is expected across India over the next week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rain, thunderstorms, hailstorms and strong winds in several regions.

The development comes as the southwest monsoon approaches Kerala, marking the beginning of the country's annual monsoon season.

According to the IMD, weather activity is set to intensify across northwestern, central, northeastern and southern parts of the country. Several states are likely to experience rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over the coming days.

In Punjab and Haryana, where hot weather conditions have persisted in recent weeks, the IMD has predicted thunderstorms, rain and strong winds with speeds ranging between 40 and 60 kmph from June 4 to June 6. Similar weather conditions are expected in Chandigarh and Delhi. The national capital may witness light rain, dust storms and gusty winds on June 4 and 5, bringing some relief from rising temperatures.

Himachal Pradesh is likely to face more severe weather conditions. The weather department has issued an Orange Alert for Kangra, Mandi, Kullu, Shimla and Sirmaur districts for June 4. These areas may experience hailstorms, thunderstorms, lightning strikes and strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph. Residents have been advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions.

Neighbouring Uttarakhand is also expected to witness active weather. Heavy rainfall, hailstorms and strong winds have been forecast for Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Dehradun and Tehri districts. The IMD has warned that several parts of the state could receive intense rainfall, while snowfall is also possible in areas located above 4,200 metres.

Meanwhile, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are likely to experience rain, thunderstorms and isolated hailstorm activity as weather systems remain active across the western Himalayan region.

The IMD has advised people in affected areas to stay updated with local weather forecasts and follow safety guidelines during thunderstorms, lightning and strong wind events.
