RR face a new era as leadership void and fresh responsibilities test Jaiswal and the squad
In a move that has sent ripples across the IPL, former RCB captain Faf du Plessis has termed Sanju Samson’s switch from Rajasthan Royals to Chennai Super Kings as a “massive” development for the league and its fans. Samson, who had been the face of Rajasthan for nearly a decade, now joins CSK in a high-profile trade ahead of the IPL 2026 season.
The deal saw Rajasthan bring in Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, marking a significant reshuffle for both franchises. The two teams are set to clash in their opening encounter on March 30 in Guwahati, adding further excitement to the season opener.
Du Plessis emphasized that every successful IPL franchise has a marquee Indian player who becomes its identity over time, citing names like Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli. According to him, Samson was that figure for Rajasthan Royals, making his departure a significant emotional and strategic loss for the franchise.
The shift also brings new challenges for young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. With Samson no longer anchoring the batting lineup, Jaiswal may now face increased expectations to deliver consistently. Du Plessis noted that while added responsibility can shape a player’s growth, it is crucial for Jaiswal to retain his natural attacking style rather than feel burdened by expectations.
Meanwhile, the inclusion of Sam Curran is expected to add depth and flexibility to Rajasthan’s squad. His all-round abilities—ranging from powerplay bowling to effective death overs and crucial lower-order batting—make him a valuable asset. Beyond his skills, Curran’s leadership experience is likely to support young captain Riyan Parag as the team navigates a transitional phase.
As IPL 2026 approaches, all eyes will be on how Rajasthan Royals adapt to life without their long-time leader and whether the new combination can deliver results in a highly competitive tournament.
