Security has been tightened across the national capital ahead of the BRICS Summit scheduled to be held in Delhi on September 12 and 13. Following an alert from the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the Delhi Police and central security agencies have stepped up surveillance to prevent possible threats and disruptions during the high-profile event.
Officials fear that certain organisations or groups could attempt to obstruct the movement of VVIP leaders, breach security arrangements or disrupt the summit through protests. Intelligence inputs have warned of possible attempts to write objectionable or protest-related slogans on walls, fly drones and enter designated VVIP routes.
Following the alerts, security has been strengthened at the summit venue, major hotels, VVIP routes, key government establishments and major transport hubs across the city.
Security agencies are also assessing potential threats linked to sensitive issues concerning different participating countries. According to sources, special vigilance is being maintained over the possibility of Tibetan protests related to China and demonstrations linked to issues concerning Russia.
Agencies fear that such issues could be used to organise protests or create disturbances in Delhi during the summit. The possibility of threats linked to pro-Khalistan elements has also been included in the overall security assessment, with agencies receiving emails and other inputs related to the issue from time to time.
