Supreme Court on Thursday expressed concern over the closure of 16 Delhi Metro stations following protests at Jantar Mantar, with Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant warning that the court would intervene if the situation was not resolved by lunchtime.
The remarks came during the hearing of a petition filed by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), which challenged the closure of metro stations and sought limited access for lawyers, litigants, and court staff to ensure smooth functioning of judicial proceedings.
Hearing the plea, CJI Surya Kant observed that no adverse orders would be passed due to the absence of lawyers affected by the metro closures. He added that if the issue remained unresolved by noon, the Supreme Court would consider stepping in.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had announced the closure of 16 metro stations from 7:30 a.m. in view of ongoing protests at Jantar Mantar. The affected stations include Rajiv Chowk, Supreme Court, Mandi House, ITO, Lok Kalyan Marg, Patel Chowk, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Barakhamba Road, Seva Teerth, Janpath, Central Secretariat, Delhi Gate, Indraprastha, Khan Market, Jor Bagh, and Shivaji Stadium.
According to the DMRC, these stations will remain closed until further orders as a precautionary security measure. The closures have disrupted daily commuters, particularly those travelling to courts and government offices in central Delhi.
