Punjab Finance, Excise and Taxation Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Monday said the state government will not allow tax evasion and will continue taking strict action against violators after a major GST enforcement drive resulted in the detention of 170 goods vehicles across Punjab.
The operation was carried out jointly by all State Investigation and Preventive Units, with special focus on Mandi Gobindgarh and Khanna. During the drive, authorities seized iron scrap and finished iron and steel goods valued at more than ₹5 crore.
Cheema said a substantial number of vehicles were found transporting goods without proper invoices and prescribed documents, which is a violation of GST provisions. He emphasized that every legitimate rupee must reach the state exchequer and that the government is committed to strengthening tax compliance.
Minister informed that the detained consignments are currently undergoing detailed verification, which is expected to be completed within a week. Following the verification process, the department will determine and recover the applicable taxes and statutory dues and take appropriate action against those found violating the law.
Cheema said the crackdown is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to curb the movement of undocumented goods and ensure greater transparency and discipline in trade practices across Punjab.
