Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi on Saturday to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit. During his visit, Xi is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit.
Xi is visiting India at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi.
This marks the Chinese President’s first visit to India in seven years. His last visit was in 2019, when he attended the informal summit held in Mamallapuram near Chennai.
A high-level Chinese delegation has accompanied Xi, including Cai Qi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, as well as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Speaking in Beijing ahead of the visit, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that the meeting between Xi and Modi would be their third face-to-face interaction in as many years, following meetings in Kazan and Tianjin. She said China is willing to work with India under the strategic guidance of the two leaders to view bilateral relations from a long-term perspective, enhance dialogue, strengthen cooperation, and properly manage differences.
Describing BRICS as an important platform for solidarity among emerging markets and developing countries, Mao said President Xi will address the summit and discuss international developments and the future direction of BRICS. Amid ongoing global tensions, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Iran-US standoff, she reiterated China’s support for political solutions through dialogue and its commitment to promoting global peace and stability.
