At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured in a deadly mass shooting in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg, South Africa, on Tuesday night.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers responded to reports of gunfire at the Jumpers informal settlement at around 11:10 p.m. Upon arrival, they found multiple victims lying at different locations across the area.

Eight men and three women were declared dead at the scene, while another victim later succumbed to injuries in hospital, taking the death toll to 12.

Police said more than 10 suspects were allegedly dropped off near the settlement from a white Toyota Quantum vehicle. The gunmen reportedly entered the area through two different routes, moved through the settlement while firing at residents, and then fled in the same vehicle.

In an official statement, police said the suspects were seen disembarking near a petrol station in Cleveland before carrying out the attack. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and no arrests have been made so far.

Authorities have launched a large-scale search operation and appealed to the public for any information that could help identify and apprehend the suspects.
