A tragic accident claimed the life of a 13-year-old Sikh boy who had arrived in Amritsar with a group of devotees from Haryana's Sirsa district to pay obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib.
According to reports, a group of 15 pilgrims reached Amritsar around 2 a.m. on Sunday night for darshan at the holy shrine. The devotees were waiting outside the main gate of Amritsar Railway Station for the free bus service operated by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) when a decades-old massive tree suddenly collapsed.
The falling tree struck Rajpreet Singh, a young Amritdhari Sikh boy, causing fatal injuries. He died on the spot, triggering panic among devotees and bystanders. Local residents immediately rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts.
Railway Police ASI Bagicha Singh said the body has been sent for post-mortem examination and will be handed over to the family after the legal formalities are completed.
Following the incident, SGPC officials, including Sri Darbar Sahib Manager Bikramjit Singh, reached the site to assess the situation. They expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and assured them of all possible assistance.
The victim’s father informed authorities that the family is financially weak, prompting appeals for support and compensation in the wake of the tragedy.
