The West Bengal government has made the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ compulsory in all madrasas functioning under the state’s Minority Affairs and Madrasa Education Department. The order was issued on May 19 and came to light on Thursday.
According to the government directive, the rule will be implemented immediately in government model madrasas, government-aided, and unaided madrasas across the state. Under the new order, students and staff will now be required to sing ‘Vande Mataram’ during the morning assembly before classes begin.
Earlier, madrasas used to sing the national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’ along with Bengali poet Ghulam Mustafa’s song ‘Ananta Asim Premomoy Tumi’ during morning prayers. After implementing the new directive, all madrasas have also been asked to submit compliance reports to the department.
