State-owned telecom company BSNL has introduced a satellite phone capable of operating without a conventional mobile network by connecting directly to satellites in space. The device is designed for use in remote regions, forests, mountainous terrain, and disaster-hit areas where regular cellular connectivity is unavailable.

The satellite phone allows users to make voice calls and send messages through satellite communication, ensuring connectivity even in locations beyond the reach of traditional telecom networks.

However, the device is not available for unrestricted public purchase. Due to national security and technical regulations, individuals must obtain special approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) before purchasing or using the phone. It is primarily intended for government agencies, the armed forces, disaster management teams, maritime operations, and organizations working in remote locations.

Satellite phone is priced at ₹1,34,166 (including taxes), making it a premium communication device. In addition to the handset cost, users are required to pay separate subscription charges for satellite calling and messaging services, which are significantly higher than standard mobile plans because the device connects directly to satellites.

Phone is not available through retail mobile stores or e-commerce platforms. Interested buyers must contact their nearest BSNL office and complete the required approval process. Further information regarding eligibility and procurement can be obtained from the local BSNL office or the designated customer support channel.
